LAUREL TRUE AND FRIENDS in Jacmel Haiti. Mosaic Mural Part 2 - Sea Spirits - Aug 26,2010
Mosaic artist and community builder, LAUREL TRUE brings the MOSAIC OF ART back to Haiti - specifically she re-visits the ART CREATION FOUNDATION FOR CHILDREN in Jacmel. Earlier this spring, Laurel, accompanied by fellow artist ERIN ROGERS, led the staff and students of ACFFC plus community volunteers, in creating a stunning mosaic mural on a wall near the beach. This was Phase 1.
Before the work began.
With the mural's conclusion and celebration, the offer was presented and accepted to round the corner and continue on a new and much longer section of wall. Phase 2.
A look around the corner - Phase 1 to Phase 2
The focus in this second session is not just to create more beauty for the community of Jacmel, traumatized by the January earthquake, but to develop a core of mosaic-making team leaders, who can in turn pass their inspiration and skills to successive crews of artists and volunteers in Jacmel and beyond. JUDY HOFFMAN, one of the founder of the Art Creation Foundation for Children was introduced its programs here in an earlier interview.
Here are a few photos Laurel has sent from the first three days of work this week.
Day 1
After a warm welcom, the work begins in the ACFFC workshop with a session of designing and fabricating a school of fish, mounting them on mesh. The kids are already primed and ready and have an entire project under their belts. This time, they managed to create 30+ fish, mounting them on mesh in under two hours.
Day 2
Day two we took a small group to the wall to explain design transfer in detail. Drawing the design on the wall combines transfer from studio sketches plus improvisation.

Chat rouge (Octopus)
Adhering the mosaic fish is accompanied by direct setting of broken tiles into the outlines
Day 3
Mosaic mounting on the wall has begun. Mural is 99% designed by ACFFC youth - Yay!
Background will be dark blues and aqua and white. White moon and big
mirror stars are not drawn on yet. "A demain" (til tomorrow)
Laurel and Erin's stay ends Saturday, so much remains to be done. She has promised an interview one evening, which will air later on the MOSAIC OF ART.
Handmade fish tiles donated by ROBIN INDAR of Rebel Tiles in No. California.
Other ceramic artists sent fish too!

MOSAIC OF ART - Episode 22 - Jul 04,2010
The MOSAIC OF ART radio show explores the making and distribution of visual art by talking with artists, curators, webmasters, dealers, coaches, publishers and other arts professionals about their creative processes.
LYNNE CHINN will be Sunday's MOSAIC OF ART guests. From her Plano, Texas studio, she creates award-winning fine art mosaics, fully exploiting the medium with her experimental substrates, layering, color blends and textures.
She eloquently describes how her discovery of mosaics drew on her graphic design and painting talents. Public art commissions, private commissions and ecclesiastical projects are all part of her current practice.
Each element informs the others; here is a slideshow of work she will speak about, including this Annunciation for the Mt. Angel Abbey in Oregon, which has its own step-by-step slideshow.
Please tune in and tell your friends too! MOSAIC OF ART 3-4pm EDT on Sundays. After airing live, the show archives for listening any time.If you're already a fan of the show, please help sustain it by telling friends on facebook, forwarding this email and marking the show a favorite on BlogTalkRadio. MOSAIC OF ART - Episode 21 - Jun 27,2010
The MOSAIC OF ART radio show explores the making and distribution of visual art by talking with artists, curators, webmasters, dealers, coaches, publishers and other arts professionals about their creative processes.
DAVID CSICSKO is the first guest on Sunday's MOSAIC OF ART. From his Chicago design studio, he creates the engaging graphic images that grace event posters, assorted publications and fine arts productions.
David takes us on a tour of the studio and describes his process, working across various media, such as this stained glass window.
Collaborating with ERIN ADAMS in Albuquerque, New Mexico, he produces ceramic and glass mosaics for schools, liturgical spaces and metro systems.
Here's a slide show of the Belmont Station in Chicago.
In the second half of the show, photojournalist, public speaker and educator, ALYX KELLINGTON will present her collection of so-called "Outsider" art, but her approach is to always first establish a personal connection to the artists who've created that work. Alyx is away this week, so I've had to use some photos from other sources.Miss Ruby - courtesy Story CorpsMiss Ruby - Courtesy Florida Folk FestivalPurvis Young - UntitledHoward Finster - I Dreamed I was Preaching... MOSAIC OF ART - Episode 19 - Jun 10,2010
The MOSAIC OF ART radio show explores the making and distribution of visual art by talking with artists, curators, webmasters, dealers, coaches, publishers and other arts professionals about their creative processes.
Whether she's creating a family portrait, a personal city, a representation of heaven or hell or commemorating the heroism of firefighters, BEATRICE CORON utilizes a technique of complex silhouette cutting to create what she calls cut stories. The materials may be simply paper cut with an Exacto knife, or they might be laser-cut stainless steel for an airport, library, transit system or fire station, but there's an emotional immediacy, intelligence and liveliness in her work that is unique. This Sunday on the MOSAIC OF ART Beatrice Coron, will engage with me in a conversation about her artistic evolution, her techniques and her range of formats of expression.
So, please tune in to the MOSAIC OF ART at 3pm EDT and join us! After airing live, the show archives for listening any time.

MOSAIC OF ART - Episode 18 Laurel True & Nancie Mills Pipgras - Jun 06,2010

MOSAIC OF ART - Episode 18 - Jun 02,2010
On January 24, JUDY HOFFMAN, co-founder of the Art Creation Foundation For Children in Jacmel, Haiti was a guest and spoke about the organization's founding, mission and survival of the earthquake. Then, Two Bay Area colleagues, JENNIFER and GUY PANTALEON ran a photo workshop to help the youth of the ACFFC -- and their families -- cope with the trauma and help re-generate hope and uplift.
Now,
LAUREL TRUE, ERIN
ROGERS, NANCY
JOSEPHSON and friends are working on a MEMORIAL MOSAIC MURAL near
the beach, in collaboration with the staff and children of ACFFC. We'll
have a LIVE conversation from the site of the mural at 3pm EDT to hear
how they're progressing. The mosaic mural is a gift to the community and will serve as a memorial to the devastation and lives lost, but it will also serve as a symbol of hope and a seed for a sustainable mosaic program at the ACFFC and for other arts groups -- hopefully leading to commercially viable artistic enterprise.
Laurel has posted pictures on NANCIE MILLS PIPGRAS MOSAIC ART NOW blog, and we'll see how many more she is able to post during the week - "in her spare time!" Nancie will phone in as well from Santa Rosa, CA - both to speak with Laurel and to give an update on Mosaic Art Now's plans for 2010-2011. She's just back from a pow-wow with her co-editors, BILL BUCKINGHAM and MICHAEL WALSH. Last week on the show we ran two interviews connected to Mosaic Art Now's Exhibition in Print.
So, tune in to the MOSAIC OF ART at 3pm EDT and join us!

MOSAIC OF ART - Episode 17 - May 26,2010
Expansion design by Gwathmey Siegel & Assoc. Architects
DR. SCOTT SHIELDS is the
Chief Curator and Assoc. Director of Sacramento's Crocker Art Museum. He has
written books, catalogs and other scholarly articles -- especially about
California painting movements and contemporary ceramics. He speaks
about his recent commission to jury the Exhibition in Print that is
featured in MOSAIC
ART NOW - the 2010 edition.
It wasn't an easy selection process from among more than 500 submissions. He describes his methodology, highlights several of his favorite pieces and suggests what is needed for the mosaic medium to gain greater recognition.
ELLEN
BLAKELEY won the Best in Show award for her sculpture "Meredith"
(left) in the exhibition and she reveals her inspirations, work methods
and personal history. Besides her distinctive one-of-a-kind mosaic
artworks, Ellen has also developed a line of mosaic tiles for the
national -- and even international -- design market. Is this something
you aspire to? Ellen shares the ins and outs of that endeavor as well.
Afterward, please let me know what you think! If you like, mark the show
as a favorite on BlogTalkRadio. News, guest updates, blogs I'm
following and photos appear at www.MosaicOfArt.blogspot.com.
Next week, as promised, LAUREL TRUE will call in from the
Memorial Mosaic Mural work site in Jacmel Haiti with a field report. NANCIE MILLS
PIPGRAS will join me live to speak with her and also give us an
update following her recent pow-wow with fellow Mosaic Art Now editors BILL BUCKINGHAM
and MICHAEL
WELCH.

MOSAIC OF ART - Episode 16 - May 21,2010
The project was sponsored by hotel owners and arts patrons, ANGELA HIJJAS and HIJJAS KASTURI and bore elements of both an art commission and a residency, such as those supported by Angela and Hijjas at their Rimbun Dahan home and botanical garden, outside Kuala Lumpur.
Angela Hijjas will describe the goals, process and challenges in founding and running this unique private residency program whose primary participants are SE Asian and Australian artists.
In the second segment, GLENN ROMANIS describes a series of recent site-specific works that he created in South Eastern Australia and relates the process of designing and creating these to our collaborative project at Hotel Penaga.
Glenn's work integrates history, story-telling, topography, geography, geology and community-building. He has been commissioned by cities, museums, zoos, botanical gardens, religious organizations, and private collectors, resulting in a body of work comprising more than 100 installations. He considers much of the work to be part of a single "collage" of installations arrayed across the map of South Eastern Australia during the past 15 years.
